No national agreement on rate of pay for staff working on the day of the Royal Wedding

28 February 2011

The Royal Wedding of Prince William on Friday 29 April 2011 will be marked by a public holiday across the UK. Section 13 of “Agenda for Change” provides that NHS personnel are entitled to eight general days of public and bank holiday. There are now nine such days in 2011.

NHS Employers tried to reach a national agreement on the rate of pay for this additional bank holiday. The proposal was:

  • where employees are required to work on 29 April, payment and conditions of service will be those which apply on a normal Friday with a day off in lieu;
  • other staff would be entitled to a day's paid leave.

NHS Employers has announced that the majority of health unions have rejected this proposal. The failure to reach an agreement means that individual NHS organisations must negotiate pay rates for bank holiday work at a local level with staff and their trade unions.
