The Tribunals Service has recently issued its annual statistics for
2007/08. We summarise the key features of those relating to
Employment Tribunals below.
There has been a 43% increase in claims presented to Employment Tribunals in 2007/08, 189,303 compared to 132,577 in 2006/07.
The largest category of claims came in the form of Equal Pay disputes, amounting to 62,706 compared to 44,013 in the previous year. The Equal Pay claims figure for 2007/08 was closely followed by 55,712 Working Time (which include holidays and holiday pay) claims and 40,941 Unfair Dismissal claims.
There was a notable increase in claims of Age Discrimination with a jump from 972 in 2006/07 to 2,949 in 2007/08.
Sex Discrimination compromised the largest number of discrimination based claims in 2007/08, numbering 26,907. There were also 5,833 Disability Discrimination claims, 4,130 Race Discrimination claims, 709 claims in relation to Discrimination on grounds of Religion of Belief, and only 582 in relation to Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation.
Comment
On the
6th April 2009 the current mandatory three-step
grievance and disciplinary procedure will be abolished. This may
affect the number of some claims but the general trend continues to
be upwards.
