New laws for April 2009

The following changes in the law will take effect on 6 April 2009:

  1. New ACAS Code on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures and abolition of Statutory Dismissal and Grievance Procedures.

  2. Right to Request Flexible Working Extended

    The right to request flexible working will be extended to cover carers of all children up to and including the age of 16.  The age limit in the case of disabled children is unchanged (the right is available to carers of children up to and including the age of 17).

    Whilst Employers have a statutory duty to seriously consider any requests, employers may reject requests providing there are good business grounds to do so.
     
  3. Increase in Weekly Rate of Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Paternity Pay and Statutory Adoption Pay

    For payments starting on or after Sunday 5 April 2009, the standard rate for the above payments will increase from £117.18 to £123.06 per week.
     
  4. Increase in Statutory Sick Pay

    The weekly rate for statutory sick pay, in respect of absence on or after Monday 6 April 2009 will increase from £75.40 to £79.15 per week
     
  5. Increase in Minimum Statutory Holiday Entitlement

    From 1 April 2009 the statutory minimum holiday entitlement will increase from 24 to 28 days. Employers may include bank holidays within this statutory minimum.
