Cargo watch follow up: MV Rena

The stranded vessel MV Rena has again been battered by heavy swells and rough weather which swept across New Zealand over recent days. The vessel has now broken up and is effectively now in two pieces, albeit it does still remain firmly grounded.

Hundreds of containers remain on board, with nine more being lost overboard or crushed. An unknown quantity of oil remains onboard and further sheens have also been spotted coming from the bow and stern of the vessel.

Both Maritime NZ and Salvers continue to monitor the situation and are on standby for further developments.
