Football teams from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and law firm Hill Dickinson met last night to play a friendly fixture at Goodison Park to help raise awareness and funds for a football project that is delivered in some of Merseyside’s most deprived areas.
Merseyside’s Fire Support Network and firefighters have been taking their cage football program to areas where health and anti social behaviour are highly problematic for over two years and the project continues to grow.
Having won the World Fire-fighter Games, which took place in Liverpool during 2008, the project is also helping the team to train as they look to retain their title at the 2010 Games in Daegu, South Korea. The firefighters will also be representing the city en route to the Games by playing a fixture in Shanghai as part of the World Expo.
Chief Fire Officer Tony McGuirk commented: “Firefighters make natural role models for our young people in the community and so to see them coaching football in their spare time makes me incredibly proud. In return, we are doing all that we can to support the team in achieving their ambition to defend their World title and I'd like to thank Hill Dickinson for their support. I know the team are very grateful for the opportunity provided by Everton Football Club to play a game a Goodison - so a big thank you to them too.”
Peter Jackson, managing partner at Hill Dickinson, added: “We are very pleased and proud to be supporting Merseyside Fire and Rescue. All of the firefighters do an amazing job, not only in their day-to-day work, but also in their support for the community. The football game was an excellent way to get involved in the fundraising, not only did we have the opportunity to support a worthy local cause but it meant our boys could also brush up on their football skills and show their competitive spirit.”
The match ended 3 – 1 to Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service
