Jeff Isaacs
Partner
Jeff was appointed partner in 1989 and went on to head the firm's Commodities Group which he founded in 1993. This is now one of the leading commodities and international trade practices in London.
He has developed considerable expertise in arbitration, acting for parties both in relation to maritime disputes under LMAA (London Marine Arbitrators Association) Rules and also in commodities disputes arbitrated at numerous trade associations including GAFTA, Fosfa, Refined Sugar Association, Sugar Association of London, London Metal Exchange, International General Produce Association (IGPA) and The Coffee Trade Federation.
In tandem with his representation of parties in trade disputes, Jeff has considerable experience in advising the trade arbitration panels at GAFTA, IGPA and at the two Sugar Associations. This side of his practice involves both meeting with and advising trade arbitrators on legal matters which arise during arbitrations and in drafting arbitration awards. This has given Jeff a unique insight into the arbitrators' world and a significant advantage when acting for parties on the other side of the arbitration table. Jeff acts for major trade houses worldwide, including Argentina, Brazil, India, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Singapore, and is a much sought-after litigator in commodity related disputes.
Jeff has published papers on extensive legal issues and regularly lectures on arbitration and various marine and commodity trade topics.
“Jeff Isaacs is concise, commercial and highly experienced in matters relating to sugar and freight.” He is recommended by The Legal 500 UK 2009 for commodities and futures.
Jeff is ranked in Chambers & Partners 2010 Guide to the legal profession for commodities. Clients and peers rate Jeff as a leading international trade and commodities expert. He is especially renowned for his arbitration skills and for his “unerring strength in sugar work,” with experience of advising trade arbitration panels at the Refined Sugar Association and the Sugar Association of London.
