Our story

Hill Dickinson’s origins trace back to 1810, when the first partnerships that would become Hill Dickinson took shape. From the very early days, we learned the value of collaboration, integrity and a belief that progress starts with people, and that acting responsibly is how those values become real.

As we grew, so did our understanding of what it means to support clients through complexity. Acting for the White Star Line during the Titanic and Lusitania disasters was more than a defining chapter in our history. It taught us clarity under pressure, responsibility in high-stakes environments and the importance of standing firmly with the people who rely on you. Those lessons continue to shape how we approach challenging work and constant change.

New perspectives have always strengthened us. In 1927, Edith Berthen joined the firm as one of the first women solicitors in the UK, reflecting a culture prepared to evolve and to benefit from diverse voices. Every merger that followed, from Davis Campbell to Gorna & Co and Bullivant Jones, expanded our capabilities and brought fresh ways of thinking.

Across the decades, we have never stood still. Our move into new sectors and regions was driven by purpose, not to scale: to remain relevant, adaptable and indispensable in a world that keeps moving. That same spirit shaped moments like our role as official legal partner for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year in 2008, a reminder that heritage only has value when it supports progress.
