Safeguarding: new mandatory reporting duty to be introduced for child sexual abuse
The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, recently made a public commitment to introduce a mandatory reporting duty, which will require those working or volunteering with children to report child sexual abuse.
This commitment comes after mandatory reporting was one of key recommendations of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), after it found that thousands of victims had been let down by professionals turning a blind eye to abuse. The government intends to publish its full response to the IICSA’s report shortly.
Before the mandatory reporting duty is introduced, there will be a call for evidence and public consultation to allow professionals, volunteers, parents, victims and survivors, and the wider public to submit evidence/views on the proposed implementation of the duty.
