Zero-trust blockchain verification for WHOIS searches

The Whois system is a database containing information about domain name owners. Originally, the information was publicly available to anyone who used a Whois lookup tool. However, due to concerns about individual privacy, privacy laws now restrict the personal information that can be publicly disclosed in the Whois database. Lawyers, as well as all sorts of businesses, sometimes need to verify WHOIS details, but this can be problematic. One solution is to use zero-knowledge proofs to verify the accuracy of the information provided in the Whois database without revealing the actual information itself. Zero-knowledge proofs allow one party to prove that they know a piece of information without revealing it. The use of zero-knowledge proofs in the Whois system would protect the privacy of domain registrants while allowing them to comply with the requirements for registering a domain name. However, implementing such a system would require significant changes to the current Whois infrastructure and the development of new protocols and technologies. It would also require the cooperation of multiple stakeholders, including domain registrars, registries, and regulatory bodies, as well as the development of new policies and procedures to govern the use of the system. While the potential benefits of such a system are significant, the challenges of implementing it should not be underestimated.
