Hill Dickinson advises RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Trust on 10-year EPR deal to improve patient care

Law firm Hill Dickinson’s Health and Life Sciences team has advised The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (RJAH) on an Electronic Patient Records (EPR) deal with System C Healthcare Limited, a British supplier of health information technology systems and services.

The NHS intends that by December 2023 90% of trusts and NHS foundation trusts will have EPRs rolled out. Many trusts are procuring new systems, sometimes in collaboration with other trusts.

For RJAH, the new EPR system will enable the hospital to deliver electronic notes to all wards, as well as allowing  electronic prescribing and the ability to order and receive tests electronically. Patients will also be able to go online to modify their own appointments.

Advising RJAH on the EPR contract were Health and Life Sciences partner Jamie Foster, senior associate Christiana Demetriou and associate Jasmine Fleming-Gilmore.

The introduction of the new EPR system aims to transform the way staff at RJAH work, delivering the best possible care to patients by providing the right information at the right time. New functionality will also help manage patient flow, with key information made available on electronic ward whiteboards, care co-ordination with electronic clinical handovers, team-to-team referrals, alerts and team communications. The system incorporates a clinical narrative module that integrates seamlessly with RJAH’s theatre management system, Bluespier.

Speaking on behalf of RJAH, digital director Simon Adams said: “The new system will enable RJAH to deliver better and more joined-up care for our patients through a secure and modern platform, enabling our patients and staff to communicate digitally and improve the quality and safety of our services.”

Acknowledging the support Hill Dickinson provided to RJAH, he added: “The Hill Dickinson team added real value to the process. We found it extremely beneficial to have them alongside us throughout the negotiations, ensuring that schedules were clearly understood by all and that they maintained the purpose for which they were intended.”

Commenting on the deal for Hill Dickinson, Christiana Demetriou said: “Our team has been supporting RJAH on this project with System C since the beginning of 2022. The signing of the EPR contract is an exciting next step for RJAH, transforming how their staff work on an electronic basis, with the goal of enabling more efficient delivery of care to its patients. It was a pleasure working with Simon and the team.”
