About me

As a commercial litigator and arbitrator with over 30 years’ experience, I represent businesses and high-net-worth individuals in complex, high-stakes disputes. My practice spans international trade, insolvency, commercial fraud, maritime, and joint venture disputes — often involving multiple jurisdictions, urgent interim relief, or reputational sensitivity.

I head up Hill Dickinson’s Hong Kong office. This involves advising clients across sectors including transport, financial services, commodities, and luxury goods. I also regularly sit as an arbitrator and am a Fellow of both CIArb and HKIArb.

Clients value my breadth of experience, calm demeanour under pressure, and ability to find the signal in the noise. My job is to listen well, think clearly, and resolve disputes in a way that protects both outcome and reputation.

I’ve lived in Hong Kong since 1995 and sit on the General Committee of the Hong Kong Football Club. I grew up in New Zealand and I remain an unapologetic romantic about all things Kiwi.

My experience

  • Winning a significant arbitration in Hong Kong for a listed commodities trader against a Chinese state-owned entity.  This led to one of the earliest instances of recognition of a “foreign” arbitration award (non CIETAC) in the PRC.
  • I was part of the team that successfully sued Aeroflot on behalf of Hong Kong families following an air casualty in Siberia in March 1994.   63 passengers and 12 aircrew died.  It was subsequently revealed by the “black box” cockpit voice recorder that the co-pilot’s 15-year-old son had disengaged the autopilot.
  • A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (FHKIArb), a Member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the Law Society of Hong Kong and is admitted to the HKIAC’s Panel of Arbitrators and Emergency Arbitrators.
  • I am a Panel Member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), Full Member of the Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group, Panel Member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Panel Member of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration, Panel Member of China Maritime Arbitration Commission, Committee member of the ICC-HK ADR and Arbitration Committee, Panel Member of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration.
  • Making a successful recovery in Bitcoin against a prominent crypto trading platform after it froze our client’s fiat profits following an allegation of disruptive trading.
  • Acting for a multinational United States consumer goods distributor and successfully obtaining a judgment against a Hong Kong vendor in respect of defective facemasks produced by Mainland Chinese factories.
