The UK government has completed the final phase of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) programme. As of 2 April 2025, European nationals must obtain an ETA before travelling to the UK. Applications have been open since 5 March 2025 and the requirement is now fully in effect.
What is an ETA?
As a reminder, an ETA is a digital permission to travel – it is not a visa and does not permit entry into the UK – it authorises the individual to travel to the UK. ETAs are for ‘non-visa nationals’ i.e. individual who do not need a visa for short trips to the UK (for example, American tourists or EU business visitors).
The introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the US and Australia, and helps prevent the arrival of those who present a threat to the UK.
Who needs an ETA?
Those who have a visa will not need an ETA, nor will British or Irish Citizens. There is no change for people arriving on family or work visas, or who are currently required to apply in advance for a visitor visa.
To date, over one million travellers have been issued with an ETA, streamlining the process of short-term visits to the UK. The ETA system aims to enhance border security by allowing pre-travel screening of individuals, ensuring more efficient and secure entry into the UK.
How to apply for a UK ETA
The easiest way to apply for an ETA is via the UK ETA app, and most users will receive an automated decision within minutes. The system is designed to support spontaneous travel, and those without smartphone access can also apply through the official UK government website.
The system is designed to support spontaneous travel and users will usually get a decision within 3 working days or quicker.
From 9 April, an ETA will cost £16.
