Hill Dickinson’s international offices in Singapore and Hong Kong have maintained their rankings in The Legal 500 Asia-Pacific Guide 2023, which has been published this week.

Shipping

Singapore: The firm’s Singapore team maintains its Tier 1 ranking for Shipping for a fourth consecutive year, winning recognition among clients for its ‘quality shipping department with an established track record’ and providing ‘excellent and commercially sound advice’.

The accompanying editorial notes that the office has been involved in high levels of activity in casualty-related work, charterparty disputes linked to Covid-19, and bunker cases and has that the shipping team has been bolstered by the hire of Matthew Dow and Binoy Dubey in 2022.

Individuals noted as key lawyers include practice head Andrew Lee who “continues to impress” in shipping litigation and arbitration; Matthew Dow; Binoy Dubey; Shanna Ghose (a Next Generation Partner); Iain Sharp (“a key partner for trade and commodities matters”); Jonathan Goacher and Ian Maclean (a Leading Individual).

Hong Kong: The firm’s Hong Kong office maintains its Tier 2 ranking for shipping, led by head of office Damien Laracy, and is noted as a “major market player” with a particular specialism in cases of collisions and typhoon-related damage.

Damien Laracy is recognised as a Leading Individual and Antony Cowie receives recognition as a key lawyer on the financing and leasing side of the office’s shipping practice.

Dispute Resolution

Hill Dickinson Hong Kong office is ranked for the first time (entering the rankings at Tier 4) for its International Arbitration work, which marks an important development in the expansion and recognition of the firm’s wider service offering spanning both marine and non-marine disputes. It also maintains its ranking for disputes litigation work, noting that practice head Bryan O’Hare is “particularly adept” at handling complex cross-border commercial and insolvency disputes while Damien Laracy adds to his “eclectic” workload by handling a “considerable amount of contentious shipping work”.

Other senior lawyers in the Disputes team are Yvette Yu, Jim James and Kelly Kim.

We are pleased to see continued recognition of key practice areas in Singapore and Hong Kong, in particular the growth of our Hong Kong Disputes team’s international arbitration work, which is ranked for the first time this year.

Tony Goldsmith

Head of Marine Business Group

Tony Goldsmith, who heads the firm’s Marine and Trade group and oversees the Hill Dickinson international offices, said: “We are pleased to see continued recognition of key practice areas in Singapore and Hong Kong, in particular the growth of our Hong Kong Disputes team’s international arbitration work, which is ranked for the first time this year.”

“We have also continued to invest in our people, building strong and vastly experienced teams in both offices while advancing the careers and exposure of our upcoming lawyers. I am delighted that so many individuals have been given recognition and I congratulate them on their outstanding achievements.”
