Ian specialises in defending clinical negligence claims as well as also undertaking employers’ liability/public liability claims (EL/PL) in the NHS setting, with experience advising on most other healthcare issues. He is a partner in the Manchester health litigation team.

Ian trained with the firm and qualified in 1999, becoming a partner in 2003.

Ian specialises in defending clinical negligence claims as well as undertaking employers’ liability/public liability claims (EL/PL) in the NHS setting, although he also has experience advising on other healthcare issues. Ian is a nominated partner for the NHS Litigation Authority and has lectured widely to clients on health litigation topics.

Ian completed his law degree at Durham University and his LPC at the College of Law in York.

    • Defending the most complex and high value clinical negligence claims for the NHS Litigation Authority, including obstetric claims
    • Concluding numerous multi-million pound claims for defendant NHS bodies, largely by way of settlements involving periodical payments
    • Alternative dispute resolution undertaken in the majority of high value cases which have settled, including resolution by way of mediation
    • Acted for the defendant in the Court of Appeal decision clarifying causation in the clinical negligence claims of Gouldsmith -v-Mid Staffs NHS Trust
    • Successfully defended the cerebral palsy claim of Cox -v-Secretary of State for Health in the High Court
