Details

Ian has 12 years’ seagoing experience, acted as a director of a number of ship owning companies, and held a senior management position in a major ship manager where he had responsibility for safety, quality assurance, vetting and accident investigation for a 150 vessel fleet.

Since embarking on a career in law over twenty years ago, Ian’s seafaring experience has been invaluable. Asking the right questions with full understanding behind them and the ability to get the most out of the crew as part of information gathering exercises helps to inform any advice, not just from a legal perspective, but also a commercial one. This kind of guidance is essential for clients who want their vessels up and running as quickly as possible.

Ian responds to, and advises on, collisions, groundings, structural failure, pollution, actual and constructive total losses, fire, salvage and cargo damage. He advises on the contractual, third party disputes and criminal matters arising from casualties. In addition, he advises on MARPOL issues, hull and machinery claims, piracy, and insurance coverage disputes. Ian also drafts and advises on wreck removal contracts and disputes arising under ship management agreements and other memorandums of understanding (MOUs).

Ian has a post graduate diploma in shipping and transport management, an MBA, an LLM in international shipping and trade and a diploma in marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is also a qualified lead auditor.
