Joanna has over 15 years’ experience in the field of healthcare law. She is experienced at representing NHS bodies and other healthcare providers in Court of Protection proceedings and inquests and advises widely on general healthcare issues.

Joanna is a specialist in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the law relating to deprivation of liberty - lecturing widely on these topics to a range of audiences from clinicians and social professionals and allied professionals such as probation to carers and service users. Joanna also regularly advises on the Mental Health Act 1983. She has a special interest in funding issues and in particular NHS continuing healthcare funding.

  • Experience

    • Regularly advising ICBs in relation to responsible commissioner issues.
    • Advising ICBs in relation to their Section 117 after care policy and supporting them with disputes with the local authority.
    • Dealing with numerous high profile complex inquests of prisoners and patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.  Conducting advocacy in the Coroner’s court.  These inquests are generally Article 2 inquests requiring a Jury.
    • Representing ICBs in relation to challenges to deprivation of liberty under Section 21A of the Mental Capacity Act, including conducting advocacy at the Court of Protection.
    • Dealing with complex cases involving PHBs and direct payments.
