Louise is a legal director in the Healthcare team with particular expertise in mental health and mental capacity law, community care, responsible commissioner disputes and inquest work.

Details

Prior to joining the Health Advisory team, Louise was a partner at an established law firm where she managed the mental health department and had also previously worked for Hill Dickinson in the Manchester office.

Louise has specialised in mental health and mental capacity law since 2009, having previously worked as a crime and prison lawyer with special interest in mentally disordered offenders. Having acted for NHS and private healthcare providers, Louise spent seven years representing patients or their families within the court of protection and first-tier tribunal (mental health), including some of the most high-profile forensic mental health patients in the country. She has considerable experience of judicial review, human rights and responsible commissioner work as well as undertaking inquest work. Louise gained her qualification as a Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Courts Civil Proceedings) in 2018.

    • R (on the application of Pendlebury) -v- Secretary of State for Justice [2013] EWHC 3613 - involved in representation for the claimant in judicial review of the lawfulness of a remission warrant moving the patient from hospital to prison
    • R -v- Poole [2014] EWCA Crim 1641 - Louise acted for the defendant in relation to mental health law matters and assisted his criminal law team in relation to these proceedings relating to section 45A MHA 1983
    • R -v- Vowles, Barnes, Coleman, Odiowei, Irving, McDougall [2015] EWCA Crim 45 - represented the appellants in two of the six appeal cases heard together dealing with consideration of whether prison sentences should be replaced with hospital orders
    • Re X (A Child) (No.3) [2017] EWHC 2036 (Fam) - representing the CCG in a case involving a child in secure accommodation requiring hospital admission
    • GTI, Re [2020] EWCOP 28 - represented the mental health trust in these proceedings for declarations for P to undergo medical treatment against his wishes.
