Tom Burdass

Tom is a legal director in the marine, trade and energy team at the London (City) office. He acts for clients in both dry and wet shipping litigation with a particular focus on P&I and FD&D disputes in which he has extensive experience.

Details

Tom specialises, in particular, in advising on disputes involving all aspects of charterparties including associated sale contracts, bills of lading, pool agreements, MOAs, shipbuilding and offshore contracts and all types of marine insurance and cover disputes. He has undertaken a number of secondments to P&I and FD&D Clubs throughout his career, which provides him with a good understanding of what these clients require from an external lawyer.

Tom also advises on reviewing a range of shipping contracts including charterparties, bills of lading, letters of undertaking and indemnity and has experience in drafting bespoke clauses and documents.

Tom’s considerable experience in shipping litigation, often with multi-jurisdictional dimensions, covers disputes both in London arbitration and cases before the English High Court of Justice.

He provides regular updates and talks on topical shipping issues to clients.

    • Advised owners in respect of loading obligations during cargo operations and damage to a vessel’s lifting gear
    • Acted in two interpleader applications before the Commercial Court regarding payment of hire into Court subject to a notice of lien
    • Acted for owners in London arbitration proceedings regarding a soya bean cargo claim brought by cargo receivers
