Women and Equalities Committee publish Menopause and the Workplace Report

The House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) has recently published a report, Menopause and the workplace. In summary, the report:

  • Recommends that the government should appoint a Menopause Ambassador.
  • Urges the government to legislate to make the right to request flexible working a day-one right.
  • Recommends that the Health and Safety Executive and the Equality and Human Rights Commission should publish guidance on menopause.
  • Recommends that the government should: (a) commence the currently inactive s14 of the Equality Act 2010 (so as to allow dual discrimination claims); and (b) make menopause a protected characteristic in its own right. However, the government recently confirmed that it does not intend to make legislative changes to protect the rights of menopausal women, so these recommendations are unlikely to progress further at this stage.
