Helene Peter-Davies

Helene is a legal director and master mariner with more than 30 years experience in the shipping industry. She specialises in admiralty and dry litigation of a technical nature.

Details

Helene entered the maritime legal profession in 2009, qualified as a solicitor in 2012 and joined Hill Dickinson in 2022. She previously trained and practiced in a leading boutique shipping law firm.

She has considerable experience of investigating casualties, and handling cases through to resolution, including Lloyd’s Salvage Arbitration, LMAA Arbitration, High Court, Court of Appeal and mediation proceedings. Helene also regularly advises on policy and procedural issues concerning the UK Ports and Terminals industry. Helene spent 12 years’ at sea-going serving as both a deck and engineering officer on a range of vessels (tankers, container, general cargo, off-shore and ferries). She additionally gained experience as a manager in a vetting role with an Oil Major, and as lecturer and manager at one of the UK’s leading maritime colleges.

Having obtained both deck and engineering OOW certificates in 1995, Helene qualified as a master mariner in 2002. She obtained a GDL with Commendation in 2006, and a Master of Arts in Legal Studies with Distinction in 2008 and LPC with Distinction in 2011. She was awarded the Victoria Drummond Award in 2019 for her mentoring work and the Merchant Navy Medal in 2020 for services to Women in Maritime.

    • Representing owners on a bunker quality claim involving associated damage to main engine and connected systems.
    • Successful settlement via mediation of a possible repudiation of charterparty related to losses of Oil Major vetting approvals.
    • Negotiation and drafting of bareboat charter for use of an asset between two UK ports.
    • Successfully represented owners in arbitration concerning an unsafe port claim from a river grounding in a developing port.
    • Advising a pilot company on provision of pilotage services outwith of their SHA, including contract negotiations with their clients.
    • Successful settlement of an in-port collision, including enforcement against a sister-vessel.
    • Part of the respondent legal team in Chancery Court for an enquiry on account arising from a breach of fiduciary case.
    • Negotiation and settlement of an LOF SCOPIC claim by salvors, where salvors withdrew services.
    • Favourable settlement of cargo damage claims arising from carriage of steel finished products.
