We’re pleased to have significantly strengthened our Independent Healthcare team, as we continue to grow the firm’s wider offer in the Health and Social Care sector.

The firm has today announced the appointments of Partners Clare Auty and Carl May-Smith, both of whom join from Browne Jacobson.

Clare will work alongside existing Corporate Partner Monica Macheng to further grow the independent health and social care practice.

A corporate and commercial specialist bringing extensive expertise in independent health, care and life sciences, Clare acts on behalf of providers, funders, and investors, as well as manufacturers of medical devices and healthtech developers. She advises on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and commercial contracting for health and social care providers. Prior to her 11-year tenure at Browne Jacobson, where she was sector lead for independent health and social care, she spent more than 15 years in-house, most notably as General Counsel at mental health services provider St Andrew’s Healthcare and Head of Legal Services (EMEA) at beverage giant Molson Coors.

Also joining Hill Dickinson’s partnership is Carl May-Smith, a barrister specialising in regulatory and criminal law with a focus on the health and care sector. He advises on CQC, Ofsted and GOC standards, financial regulation, health and safety, and environmental law. Carl has worked extensively with care providers, investors and public bodies requiring proactive regulatory litigation advice or specialist regulatory due diligence. Prior to Browne Jacobson, where he spent almost 15 years, Carl was a Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Both Clare and Carl will be based in our fast-growing Birmingham office, which recently relocated to 5 St Philip’s just two years after launching in the city. The wider firm has added almost 20 new senior hires this year, with our partnership growing to more than 190 colleagues.

Clare and Carl are fantastic additions to the team, in what is an important demonstration of the strength and continued expansion of our health and social care capabilities nationally. Alongside our extensive support for the NHS, we continue to act on some of the most significant transactions in the independent healthcare space while helping clients to navigate regulatory hurdles and commercialise innovative new treatments and devices. Clare and Carl’s experience will only strengthen our growth ambitions as the independent sector continues to deliver on its clinical and commercial priorities.

Head of Health at Hill Dickinson

Clare Auty, Head of Independent Health (Joint) at Hill Dickinson, said: “Hill Dickinson has a nationally renowned health and social care practice, and its experience spanning both NHS and independent providers and scale of team is one that few firms can match. That heritage, combined with the firm’s investment in its people and its brand and commitment to the sector, proved a significant draw, as we now look to grow our independent health and care offer further.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside Monica, Carl and the wider team as we continue to support providers and investors through every stage of their growth.”
