Alexander Freeman

Alexander is a partner based in the Piraeus office with a practice that covers most aspects of shipping law including disputes arising from charterparties, cargo claims, S&P MOA disputes, and carriage of goods by sea. He acts for shipowners, charterers, traders and their insurers and P&I Clubs, with clients based in Greece, EMEA, the United States, Asia and Latin America.

Details

Alex has been with the firm since November 2014, prior to which he worked for the Greek delegation and Legal Affairs and External Relations Bureau of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organisation in Montreal, and previously Norton Rose Fulbright. Alex was also the law associate to Mr Justice Davies and Mrs Justice

McCallum of the New South Wales Supreme Court.
Experience includes both arbitration (LMAA Full Terms and SCP, ICC) and proceedings before the English High Court.

Alex has particular experience in cross border insolvency proceedings involving jurisdictions such as the United States and Japan and enforcement proceedings in jurisdictions such as Greece, Ecuador, Switzerland, Luxembourg, India and the United States.

Alex is an experienced litigator but also assists his clients to resolve disputes commercially. He has a strong interest in alternative dispute resolution and has successfully represented clients in several mediations in the UK and Greece. Alex is also very experienced at assisting clients manage disputes at an early stage to avoid escalation, where possible. 

Alex specialises predominantly in dry shipping disputes and advisory work which includes charterparties, cargo claims, S&P MOA disputes, and disputes arising from the carriage of goods by sea. Alex also assists clients in contract preparation, negotiation and commercial discussions aimed at avoiding disputes.   

Alex acts for shipowners, charterers, traders and their insurers and P&I Clubs, with clients based in Greece, EMEA, the United States, Asia and Latin America.

Alex is a graduate of the University of Sydney Law School, undertaking part of his graduate studies at the East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai. He was a recipient of the Helpmann Fellowship at the University of Sydney and a tutor at St John’s College at the University of Sydney.

    • Currently co-acting for shipowners in a very high value marine insurance claim arising from the detention of the vessel in Indonesia. 
    • Currently acting for buyers of a vessel under a Memorandum of Agreement in a high value claim arising from defects discovered following delivery. 
    • Currently acting for all the claiming owners under a handling agreement in relation to variety of disputes under a chain of 5 charterparties.  
    • Currently acting for charterers under charterparty disputes also involving a letter of guarantee issued by the charterer’s affiliate.
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration Award, favourable to charterer clients, obtained in relation to damages arising under an indemnity agreement.  
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration award, favourable to charterer clients, obtained in relation to a frustrated contract.
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration award, favourable to shipowner clients, obtained in relation to unpaid demurrage and general damages for breach of the charterparty. 
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration award, favourable to shipowner clients, obtained in relation to unpaid hire following the vessel’s quarantine during Covid-19.
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration award, favourable to shipowner clients, obtained in relation to allegedly time-barred demurrage claims. 
    • Recent LMAA Arbitration awards (jurisdiction and liability), favourable to shipowner clients, obtained in relation to a jurisdictional challenge as well as the substantive dispute involving liabiity under a Contract of Affreightment.

Alexander Freeman's Expertise
