David Beaves is a Consultant based in Hong Kong with over 40 years of experience in ship financing and leasing, ship sale and purchase and corporate and commercial matters. He has advised global banks, financial institutions, shipowners and traders throughout Asia.

David has developed an extensive network with a strong track record of leading many ground-breaking deals such as advising banks on Japanese leasing operations. One of such matter won the Lloyd’s List Deal of the Year Award. He is also a thought leader with insight into the trends and developments that impact on the global shipping industry, with a recent focus on China’s One Belt One Road initiative. 

David is widely recognised as one of the leading shipping and ship finance lawyers. In the previous editions of Chambers, clients and peers have been quoted saying that ‘“First-rate ship finance lawyer”. David Beaves brings a great deal of experience to the table in financings. Peers view him as an “experienced and reliable person to work with”.

He is ranked in Chambers as an eminent practitioner in China for Shipping: Finance, given his achievement, clientele and market-leading position. 

David is also recognised in the Hall of Fame by Legal 500 Asia Pacific in 2021

David’s specialisms include: banking, corporate and commercial with reference to shipping. This entails advising on shipbuilding contracts, registration and transfer of vessels, joint ventures for shipping operations, acquisition and disposal of shipping companies, sale of vessels , general advice and assistance for leading and global ship management companies together with general corporate and commercial work which falls outside shipping.

    David is the former President of Hong Kong Society of Notaries and has sat as a council member for many years. He is also the Honorary Legal Advisor to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum which he helped establish. He is also the honorary legal adviser to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong
